A quality stand mixer is a big investment, so making sure get what you pay for is a big concern. From the mixers I’ve used I can tell you going the cheap route has not worked out very well for me. I’ve been through quite a few over the years.

Recently I had the chance to try out the KitchenAid KSM150PS Artisan Series 5-Quart Mixer. It’s certainly a bit more expensive than stand mixers I’ve used in the past but the quality and functionality are miles ahead of the cheapo plastic models.

One Powerful Machine

The KitchenAid Artisan mixer has a 325 watt motor which is plenty of power for just about any household mixing job. The ten speed settings also give you a great deal of control over the mixer. You can gradually increase the speed without the contents splattering everywhere.

The stainless steel bowl has a 5 quart capacity. According to the KitchenAid website this would yield 4 ½ loaves of bread, 9 dozen cookies, or 7 pounds of potatoes, although I never had the occasion to make such large batches.

All Mixed Up

Some mixers tend to miss parts of the bowl, but the KitchenAid KSM150PS did a really good job of hitting the bottom and the sides of the bowl. Prior to purchase I looked over some of the reviews at Amazon and a common complaint was that the mixer just wasn’t mixing well. This can easily be fixed by adjusting the beater adjustment screw. There’s a guide in the user’s manual if you need to make any adjustments.

The beater and the shaft on the Artisan mixer rotate in opposite directions, which makes for great coverage. The beater hits 67 points around the bowl so you don’t need to do any rotation on bowl while it mixes.

Clean and Easy

Stand mixers can be a messy proposition. Cleaning the counter is a given and walls aren’t out of the question. The KitchenAid 5 quart mixer cuts down on the mess quite a bit. So what about the dishwasher? The beaters, attachments, the bowl, and the shield will all be fine in the dishwasher. The all metal construction is easy to clean with a simple wipe down if you should happen to make a mess, which I can still do from time to time.

• The 5 quart mixing bowl locks into place.
• The pouring shield fits around the top to prevent splashing.
• The chute allows you to add ingredients easily.
• The mixing head tilts back and locks in place which makes it easy to get to the beaters and the bowl.

What’s Included?

Other than the mixer itself, of course, the KitchenAid Artisan KSM150PS mixer includes:

• The flat beater – Ideal for mixing batter and dough, good for cakes and cookies.
• The dough hook – Takes the work out of making bread. The dough hook mixes and kneads yeast dough.
• The wire whip – Add air in the mixing process to make fluffier angel food cake and whipped cream.

What Else Can It Do?

Well a lot actually. There are quite a few optional attachments you can buy separately to add to the Artisan mixer. There’s a sausage stuffer kit, a ravioli maker, a roto slicer and shredder, and ice cream maker, and a citrus juicer, to name a few. You can do a whole lot more than mix dough if you’d like.

It’s No Lightweight!

The KSM150PS mixer is serious piece of equipment. While I suppose you could store it away after each use it really needs a permanent spot on the counter top. At 25 pounds it’s not something you want to lug around and boost onto a high pantry shelf.

I don’t mind leaving it out because it really is a nice looking machine. The last time I counted there were 27 different color finishes available. I’m sure you can find a couple, or maybe more, that you like.
