A quality stand mixer is a big purchase with many selling for over $200.  It makes sense that if you’re going to spend that kind of money you will want to get a model that will last for years to come.  The KitchenAid Artisan mixer is one of the most popular models out there for a good reason.  The KitchenAid brand has been around since 1919 and their very first product was a stand mixer.  Since then they have continued to create great mixers as well as a whole slew of other kitchen appliances.

One of the first things I noticed about the KitchenAid Artisan Series was the design.  While functionality is the number one goal of any household appliance it doesn’t hurt to look nice either.  The sleek metal finish comes in over twenty colors ranging from a simple black to a bright green apple color.  The mixer weights 25 pounds so it’s not exactly easy to move around.  Thankfully it looks really nice sitting on the counter.

So the Artisan mixer looks good but how does it perform?  This mixer is up to just about any task aside from industrial size baking projects.  Homes and restaurants alike use the KitchenAid mixer.  The 325 watt motor provides enough power to mix just about anything you’ll throw at it.  The 5 quart mixing bowl is big enough to mix up large batches.

The mixer is also versatile featuring 10 different mixing speeds.  On the lower speeds you can slowly mix ingredients and add air to recipes like homemade whipped cream.  Higher speeds will mix the toughest batters.  Having ten speeds is really helpful because you can gradually increase the speed without making huge jumps.

The Artisan mixer can do more than just mix batter and dough.  It comes with a wire beater for mixing ingredients that need air such as creams.  There is a bread hook included as well that is good for yeast dough, good for pizza and bread.  There are many other attachments that you can purchase to do a whole bunch of cooking tasks.

Clean up can be an issue with stand mixers.  Adding ingredients can cause splatter.  Having too few speeds can also cause a mess when you go just a notch too high.  This mixer addresses this problem by including a pour shield that will keep splashing to a minimum.   The bowl, the shield, and the mixing attachments are all removable and are dishwasher safe which speeds up the cleaning process.  The base of the machine is pretty easy to wipe down when you’re finished.

If you’re looking for a reliable, quality stand mixer I would give the KitchenAid Artisan mixer a try.  There are certainly cheaper options available but the ones that I’ve used just don’t hold up well over time.  It adds up having to replace your mixer over and over again.  Spending a little more now will get you a mixer that will last you years down the road.
